The national disaster agency reported on Wednesday that twelve individuals have perished due to floods and landslides triggered by intensified monsoon rains influenced by a typhoon in the Philippines.
The German Press Agency (dpa) cited the weather bureau's information that Typhoon Gaemi, locally known as Carina, is exerting maximum sustained winds of 155 kmph and gusts reaching up to 190 kmph. The weather bureau further explained that the typhoon is amplifying the southwest monsoon, resulting in increased rainfall across the Philippines, which has been grappling with heavy rains since July 11.
In response to the flooding, educational classes at all levels and operations at most government offices were suspended in the Philippines, while stock and foreign exchange markets were also halted. The Manila airport authority confirmed the cancellation of 13 flights on Wednesday. Additionally, the Philippine coastguard reported that 354 passengers and 31 vessels were left stranded at various ports.
However, flights between the UAE and Manila are currently operating as usual, with no announcements of suspension as yet.
