As of Monday evening, local authorities confirmed that 50 people had died and 15 others were still missing after heavy rains caused by Typhoon Gaemi struck Zixing City in central China's Hunan Province, according to Xinhua News Agency.
The rainstorms, which began in late July, have had a severe impact on Zixing, leading to flash floods and landslides. Efforts to rescue those affected and to rebuild after the disaster are currently in progress.
Earlier in August, at least 30 people died in central China due to several days of intense rainfall that occurred during the first week of the month. This heavy rain was also a result of Typhoon Gaemi, which passed through the Philippines and Taiwan before making landfall in eastern China, with Hunan province, particularly its hilly, landlocked areas, suffering significantly.
