The UAE Government announced several measures on Friday aimed at enhancing road safety, including deterrent penalties. The new federal decree law on traffic regulations will take effect on March 29, 2025. Penalties can reach up to Dh200,000 for offenses such as driving under the influence of narcotic substances, psychotropic substances, or similar. The court will also impose imprisonment and a fine of at least Dh30,000. The court can suspend the driving license for a period of no less than six months for the first offense; one year for the second; and cancel it after the third offense.

Driving or attempting to drive under the influence of alcoholic beverages will result in imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dh20,000 and not more than Dh100,000, or either of these penalties. The court will suspend the violator's driving license for a period of not less than three months for the first offense; six months for the second, and cancel it for the third.

Penalties for jaywalking include imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dh5,000 and not more than Dh10,000, or one of these penalties, if the offense results in a traffic accident. Higher penalties will be imposed for crossing from non-designated places with a speed limit of 80kmph or more. These individuals will be punished with imprisonment for a period of not less than three months and a fine of not less than Dh10,000, or one of these penalties.

Driving with a suspended or unrecognized license will result in imprisonment for a period not exceeding three months and a fine of not less than Dh10,000, or one of these penalties. Driving with a foreign license not recognized in the UAE will incur a fine of not less than Dh2,000 and not more than Dh10,000 for the first offense. Recidivism will result in imprisonment for a period of not less than months and a fine of not less than Dh5,000 and not more than Dh50,000, or one of these penalties.
