On Wednesday, authorities disclosed that approximately 1.5 million workers inhabit labor accommodations throughout the UAE. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) reported that more than 1,800 companies are enrolled in its electronic Labor Accommodation System. During the most recent inspections of worker residential facilities, the ministry identified 352 violations, including insufficient ventilation and air conditioning, inadequate safety measures for flammable materials, non-compliance with sanitation standards, and general cleanliness problems in the housing units.
Following the inspections conducted from May 20 to June 7, several companies received warnings while others were fined. Some were given up to one month to rectify their accommodations. Mohsin Ali Al Nassi, Assistant Undersecretary for Inspection Affairs at MoHRE, stated: "The ministry is dedicated to ensuring labor accommodations meet the highest standards of comfort, safety, and security. Ministry inspectors routinely conduct field visits to labor accommodation facilities across the UAE to guarantee companies fulfill their obligation to provide suitable and comfortable housing for their workers."
Labor accommodations are required to ensure a continuous supply of clean, cold water, along with adequate bedroom and washroom facilities. Inspectors check that ventilation, air conditioning, and sanitation services are in place, and that workers have at least three square meters of space each. Inspectors also confirm that the accommodations adhere to health, comfort, and cleanliness standards, evaluate safety measures and the suitability of the building and location for habitation, and ensure that the buildings and facilities are constructed from materials that are not detrimental to the environment or public health.
