Despite UAE authorities' continuous efforts to crack down on illegal street vendors and unauthorised pop-up shops, some of these operations may still be active across the country. Sharjah Municipality issued a warning on Thursday, urging residents to avoid purchasing goods from these 'unregulated markets'. The authority highlighted that while illegal vendors often offer products at unusually low prices, there is no assurance that these items are safe for use. Such products are frequently 'counterfeit or expired', according to the municipality. 'Don't be lured by low prices at the expense of your safety and your family's well-being,' the municipality advised. In June, UAE authorities reported that 620 violations were documented during over 4,000 inspections at local markets in 2023. Hundreds of counterfeit and imitation products were seized, and several violators were arrested. In Ras Al Khaimah, authorities uncovered two warehouses filled with countless boxes of 'branded' shampoo, lipsticks, and other cosmetic products, all of which were found to be fake. The total value of the confiscated items amounted to Dh23 million.
