With residents from all over the world calling the UAE home, the nation is renowned for its initiatives aimed at enhancing its position across various sectors. From bolstering financial stability to advancing local agriculture, recent cabinet decisions aim to elevate the economy, society, and quality of life for all in the Emirates.

Chaired by the Ruler of Dubai, the cabinet meeting in Al Marmoom saw the discussion and adoption of several strategic initiatives that align with the UAE's forward-looking vision. Here are the key programmes covered:

1. 'Plant the Emirates': As the UAE seeks to boost local produce and develop its agricultural sector, the Dubai Ruler launched the 'Plant the Emirates' programme and approved the establishment of the National Agricultural Centre. Building on the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed, the programme involves efforts to plant more trees, increase farm numbers, and reduce agricultural waste. In line with its name, 'Plant the Emirates' will collaborate with institutions across the country, including federal and local government entities, municipalities, private sector organizations, and community members. Under a unified identity, crops and agricultural products will be showcased and marketed through events, campaigns, and exhibitions. Volunteer programmes and competitions for students and the public will also be organized.

2. Biodiversity Sites Project: During the meeting, the cabinet reviewed the progress of the project that identified nine key biodiversity sites in the UAE. These sites include the first globally recognized locations for Arabian gazelles, such as the Arabian Sand Gazelle and the Arabian Oryx. Additionally, two sites of global importance for dugongs (sea cows) were identified, marking the first of their kind in the Middle East. Three sites of global significance for three endemic species of gecko were also identified. The project aims to increase the percentage of protected areas among key biodiversity sites from 37.59% to 98.13%, enhance the index of marine protected areas from 48.61% to 98.17%, and improve the index of terrestrial protected areas from 51.55% to 98.08%.

3. Economic Achievements and Partnerships: The UAE's growing economy is no secret; the meeting revealed several behind-the-scenes achievements. Under the UAE Circular Economy Agenda 2031, local investments in infrastructure were supported, and the transfer of waste between emirates was regulated to foster a better environment for infrastructure investment. Legislation was implemented on the trade of plastic scrap and raw materials, promoting the use of recycled materials in the consumer goods sector. Technical regulations were also developed to manage the use of food waste (oils) as fuel for vehicles, aligning with biofuel regulations. To promote fair trade, the Cabinet ratified the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the Republic of Mauritius, enhancing long-term economic cooperation, increasing trade flows, and reducing or waiving tariffs on 97% of goods and products.

4. Restructuring Committees: To combat financial crimes and protect consumers, the Cabinet endorsed the restructuring of the National Anti-Money Laundering, Combating the Financing of Terrorism and Illegal Organizations Committee, now chaired by the Governor of the Central Bank of the UAE. The committee will develop strategies to combat financial crimes, assess national risks, facilitate information exchange, and represent the UAE in international forums. The Cabinet also approved the restructuring of the Higher Committee for Consumer Protection, chaired by the Minister of Economy, to strengthen consumer rights and awareness.

5. International Agreements: The Cabinet approved the UAE's accession to the Antarctic Treaty of 1959, ensuring that Antarctica is used for peaceful purposes and promoting international scientific cooperation. The UAE also joined the Arctic Council as an observer, enhancing cooperation with Arctic nations. An extradition treaty with Sweden was approved, and the UAE will establish a Global Health Emergency Logistics Hub in agreement with WHO. Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed with countries such as North Macedonia, Russia, the United States, and Saudi Arabia, covering areas like civil defense, financial cooperation, and renewable energy.
