The UAE on Thursday emphasized the need for significant steps towards reforming the UN Security Council, with a focus on revising the use of veto power. This call comes after the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Wednesday, which aimed to demand a ceasefire in Gaza. The UAE expressed profound disappointment that the UN Security Council has, once again, failed to pass a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

"The Security Council’s inability, for the second time in a week, to fulfill its duty to maintain international peace and security and alleviate human suffering undermines the very principles upon which the UN was established," stated the UAE Mission to the UN during the UN General Assembly Meeting. The UAE highlighted the necessity of implementing safeguards on the use of the veto, especially in situations involving mass atrocities.

"A comprehensive approach to Security Council reform, including the use of veto, is essential for enhancing our collective efforts and effectively addressing crises," the statement concluded.
