As the sweltering summer commences in the UAE with temperatures soaring above 50°C, medical professionals are advising community members to prioritize their health and safety. Anticipating higher temperatures and potential dust storms, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) used Instagram to caution UAE residents about the health risks associated with dust storms during this season. Dust storms, prevalent in summer, can carry pollutants and irritants that pose significant health hazards, particularly to those frequently exposed.
With the peak of summer starting in mid-July, MoHAP recommended several protective measures to shield residents from the adverse effects of dust: 1. Limit unnecessary outings. The Ministry encouraged residents to minimize outdoor activities and outings due to the potential health issues and respiratory impacts from dust storms. 2. Wear a mask. Residents are advised to don a mask when venturing outside, preferably an N95 mask, as dust storms can trigger allergies such as an itchy throat, eye irritation, and skin problems. 3. Wear sunglasses. Protecting eyes from harmful UV rays is crucial, especially for outdoor workers who are at greater risk of UV-related eye damage, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
Additionally, MoHAP emphasized the importance of following medication schedules, carrying an emergency inhaler for asthma patients, the elderly, children, and individuals with autoimmune or respiratory diseases, and staying hydrated to avoid dehydration, which can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and heatstroke. Residents are also advised to regularly check weather updates to be well-prepared and to know which activities to avoid based on weather conditions.
