The UAE has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to establish the 'Global Energy Efficiency Alliance' at COP29, with the goal of doubling global energy efficiency rates annually by 2030 and significantly reducing emissions. This initiative is in line with the UAE's landmark 'UAE Consensus' from COP28, where nations, organizations, and companies pledged to cut carbon emissions and minimize natural resource use.

Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), discussed this development with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) during the UAE's national pavilion events at COP29 in Azerbaijan. He explained that the UAE's proposal to create the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance stems from a worldwide push to enhance energy efficiency, and extensive discussions were held with numerous countries that welcomed the formation of the Alliance.

Al Olama highlighted that the UAE will spearhead this alliance by sharing best practices in energy efficiency, facilitating knowledge transfer, and fostering partnership models with the private sector. He urged governments, organizations, and leaders to join the alliance and collaborate to set ambitious targets that stimulate investments in energy efficiency projects and advance the policies and technologies required to meet sustainability objectives.

The alliance aims to curb carbon emissions and reduce natural resource consumption through knowledge sharing, capacity building, public-private partnerships, and standardization. This approach will also encourage investments in energy efficiency projects and develop the necessary policies and technologies to achieve sustainability goals. Al Olama noted that the alliance will compile and disseminate best practices for promoting energy efficiency from its member countries, with a particular focus on African nations. This includes initiatives related to financing and technological solutions, which are vital for Africa.
