UAE President Sheikh Mohamed attended the opening session of the COP29 World Leaders Climate Action Summit on Tuesday, reaffirming the UAE's dedication to expediting climate action and constructing a climate-resilient economy for the future. Inaugurated by Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev, the COP29 climate conference is being held in Baku from November 11 to 22 under the theme 'In Solidarity for a Green World.' Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed emphasized the UAE's longstanding tradition of environmental stewardship and adherence to sustainable development principles. He noted that this commitment resulted in the UAE hosting COP28 last year, where the country promoted international cooperation to effectively respond to the first Global Stocktake, assessing progress towards the Paris Agreement goals.
The UAE President stressed that ongoing, constructive international collaboration on climate action can usher in a new era of sustainable economic and social growth benefiting all nations. He viewed climate action as a pivotal opportunity for progress rather than a burden, citing the historic UAE Consensus at COP28 as evidence of a shared global commitment to a systematic, responsible, fair, and rational energy sector transition. This agreement also outlined a pathway to achieving the Paris Agreement's ambitions and restored confidence in the multilateral system by reaffirming previous financial commitments and efforts to mobilize climate funding for the most vulnerable nations and communities.
Sheikh Mohamed urged all parties to prioritize mutual understanding over division, emphasizing that the collective goal is to collaborate for the greater good of humanity. Upon his arrival at the COP29 venue earlier in the day, Sheikh Mohamed was greeted by President Aliyev and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Sheikh Mohamed also held discussions with several delegation heads, addressing bilateral relations between the UAE and their respective countries, as well as the crucial role of COP29 in fostering international cooperation and accelerating global climate change efforts.
