As airfares continue to rise and visa availability remains limited for many popular destinations, UAE residents are increasingly opting for local winter holiday alternatives. Staycations and unique 'seacation' experiences have emerged as the preferred choices for many expats and families.

Instead of enduring long waits for visa appointments or spending a fortune on expensive flight tickets, residents are choosing to book luxury hotel stays, explore theme parks, or embark on cruises between emirates. Experts note that the high cost and time required for international travel have driven this shift towards domestic options.

"The convenience, attractive packages, and family-friendly activities are major factors fueling this trend," said Rashida Zahid, VP of operations at Musafir.com.

Airfares to several destinations have nearly doubled during the holiday season, according to an analysis by Khaleej Times. For example, direct flights from Dubai to Amsterdam in December start at Dh 2,344, compared to Dh1,600 in March. Similarly, flights to Italy have surged to Dh2,556 in December, versus Dh1,524 in March. In the east, the cheapest direct flight to Indonesia in late December is Dh 2,085, while the same flight in March and April ranges between Dh1,200 and Dh1,800.

Visa challenges are another significant factor. Some countries require waiting times of up to a year for visa appointments. "The availability of US visa appointments exceeds a year, and Schengen visa processing times typically take longer than two months," said Shamsheed CV, senior consultant for outbound travel at Wisefox Tourism. "This has led many residents to reconsider their travel plans and opt for domestic holidays instead."

Zahid also highlighted the impact of visa delays, particularly for European destinations, on travel plans for many UAE residents.

Interest in local travel options, especially staycations and seacations, has surged, according to travel experts. Cruises within the UAE have gained popularity for offering a "unique, hassle-free experience," said Libin Varghese, sales director at Rooh Tourism. "With two-night packages from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, travelers can enjoy world-class entertainment, luxury accommodations, and gourmet dining without needing visas or flights. It's becoming the go-to choice for residents seeking a memorable holiday within the country," he added.

Resort World Cruises, a new entrant, has seen strong demand, while established lines like Costa and MSC continue to attract travelers with their attractive packages, according to Zahid.

Family-friendly resorts in Fujairah, desert escapes in Al Ain, and adventure-packed mountain retreats in Hatta are among the most sought-after destinations for UAE residents, according to travel agents. "Residents increasingly seek unique experiences within the UAE, from beach resorts to desert retreats," said Shamsheed.

Hotel room rates are typically higher during winter, but residents can save over Dh6,000 by opting for a staycation in the UAE instead of flying to European destinations, he noted. High demand is particularly seen for Dubai resorts with exclusive pools and theme park access, according to Zahid.

"Ras Al Khaimah is popular for its nature-driven getaways, while Abu Dhabi continues to attract visitors to its luxurious beachfront resorts, serene desert retreats, and the popular Yas Island with its theme parks," she added.
