As temperatures rise dramatically in the UAE this summer, residents are urging others to help make the season more bearable and cooler for laborers and outdoor workers. Social media influencers, recognizing the power of their platforms, have initiated campaigns to inspire their followers to take action. Numerous influencers have posted videos showing them setting up boxes filled with ice, water bottles, and juice packs at their doorsteps for delivery drivers enduring the intense summer heat.
Alaa Abo Holy, a prominent influencer with nearly three and a half years of experience, posted a similar video to motivate her over 185,000 Instagram followers to follow suit. She emphasized, "The weather is extremely challenging these days. It's a small act of kindness to support those who are working tirelessly in such heat." Her call to action was well-received, inspiring many of her followers to participate.
In various parts of the country, several villas have installed free water coolers outside their homes to provide relief to thirsty pedestrians. This practice of offering water and snacks to those in need is becoming increasingly common across the emirates. Mohammed Hussein highlighted the significance of supporting laborers, particularly during the summer months. He demonstrated his support by placing a cooler outside his home for anyone seeking respite from the heat, encouraging others to do the same.
Yacoub Hussein Al Jasmi, who set up a water cooler in 2017 during the construction of his house, found the process to be straightforward and affordable. He explained that he merely extended a water pipe through the wall and installed the tap outside on a marble base for effective drainage. He also noted the necessity of changing the water filter every two months to maintain water quality. Responding to feedback from workers, Yacoub plans to install a cooler with a larger base to facilitate easier bottle filling.
The Dubai government has also implemented a similar initiative, providing free water to both residents and tourists through the 'Dubai Can' project. Launched in 2022 by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the initiative has installed approximately 46 water fountains in various locations across the city, including Kite Beach, Dubai Marina, Downtown Dubai, and Khawaneej.
Mosques in the emirate have also contributed by placing fridges nearby to offer food and water to those in need. Community members ensure these fridges are consistently stocked with water, especially for those who go for walks and require hydration. Abdulrahman Hamad observed, "Whenever I try to add water to the fridge, it's already full. People constantly bring in dozens of water boxes to ensure it never runs empty."
Recently, the 'Al Freej Fridge' campaign has been distributing cold water, juices, and ice cream to workers in several neighborhoods across Dubai. This campaign aims to alleviate the impact of the summer heat on workers and foster a culture of compassion and giving within the community. The campaign, set to run until August 23, is expected to benefit over one million workers, including cleaners, construction workers, delivery riders, and agricultural workers.
While providing water coolers or drinking fountains for passersby is a commendable act, especially during the summer with its extreme daytime temperatures, authorities remind the public to adhere to regulations to prevent water contamination. In Abu Dhabi, installing coolers in public places without municipal approval is strictly forbidden. Owners of public drinking water coolers are advised to seek approval before installation, relocation, or modification. In Sharjah, water coolers must be placed within the confines of the house or building compound, with only the water pipe and faucet exposed outside.
