What began as a drive to gather 10,000 used devices has evolved into a significant movement, inspiring thousands of residents to breathe new life into their old gadgets and assist underprivileged students globally. The UAE's 'Donate Your Own Device' campaign will now be an annual, permanent initiative, as announced on Thursday. This decision comes after the campaign's extraordinary success, having collected over 50,000 electronic devices since its launch in 2023—exceeding its initial target by 400 percent. Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, shared the approval of the yearly 'device donation drive' on X. He noted that the collected devices would have amounted to 120 tonnes of electronic waste, but thanks to the initiative, these gadgets will be transformed into educational opportunities for students worldwide. The devices were recycled and refurbished to be used by needy students in their studies. 'This initiative aims to promote environmental sustainability and provide innovative educational tools,' Al Olama stated. 'We extend our gratitude to the government and private entities that contributed to making a significant impact in the education and environmental sectors worldwide and for enhancing a pioneering future built on solid foundations of education and knowledge.' UAE residents can donate their devices individually or as part of an organization. Gadgets can be dropped off at collection centers, with a home pickup option also available.
