A Dubai-based company has announced the successful completion of the first stage of trials for the UAE’s inaugural driverless trucks. Evocargo reported that the trials were conducted on a predetermined route within a closed area at the Dubai South Logistics District. The unmanned electric truck, known as Evocargo N1, was tested alongside other road users such as cars, trucks, and pedestrians. The tests evaluated the truck’s capabilities in object detection, accident prevention, collision avoidance with moving obstacles, and emergency stops.
The truck’s autopilot system underwent a comprehensive testing of various maneuvers, including parking, reverse parking, turning, and reverse turning. Additionally, the route management, remote monitoring, and control systems were also put to the test. Evocargo, a provider of electric autonomous transportation platforms, highlighted that no failures or potentially hazardous incidents were reported during the tests. The trial for the driverless trucks was initially announced in December 2022, aligning with Dubai’s aim to make 25% of transportation autonomous by 2030.
The Evocargo N1 has a lifting capacity of 2 tonnes and can carry up to six Euro pallets at a speed of 25 kmph for up to 200km. Charging the vehicle for a full day’s operation ranges from 40 minutes to six hours, depending on the outlet. The security system of the truck includes four tiers: computer vision around the vehicle, an automatic diagnostic system, a remote-stop system, and a standby pneumatic braking system. Evocargo previously stated that automatic pilot systems enhance freight transportation efficiency and reduce truck downtime, with robotization and the use of electricity and hydrogen fuel cells offering cost efficiencies.
Mohsen Ahmad, CEO of the Logistics District - Dubai South, emphasized that the collaboration with Evocargo strengthens the UAE’s industry position and sets a progressive stage for significant advancements in the regional logistics sector. Autonomous vehicles are expected to revolutionize the industry by enhancing efficiency and reducing the overall carbon footprint. Ahmed Al-Ansi, CEO of Evocargo Autonomous Logistic Services, added that the trials aim to attract new customers and investments in the GCC countries, positioning them as leaders in innovative technology.
