In the coming years, UAE drivers will no longer need to leave their vehicles to charge electric vehicles (EV). An autonomous robotic arm is showcased at the Gitex kiosk of fuel retailer Adnoc Distribution, which envisions this technology as the 'charger of the future' for electric vehicles.
"We are developing autonomous EV charging: A robotic arm that can recognize the car, start the charging process, connect the charger, and then disconnect entirely on its own using advanced artificial intelligence (AI)," explained Maaz Qureshi, vice-president of digital business at Adnoc Distribution.
This initiative aligns with the industry's shift towards robotics, AI adoption, and enhanced mobility convenience, according to Qureshi. In the first half of 2024, the company expanded its EV charging network, doubling its fast and super-fast charging points to over 100, aiming to reach 150 to 200 by year-end.
In February 2024, Adnoc Distribution launched a robotic fuelling arm pilot in Abu Dhabi to assist drivers in refuelling their vehicles. This pilot, developed over a year, is operational during hot summer months, supporting staff, boosting productivity, and reducing wait times.
The company added 10 new service stations in the first half of 2024, bringing the total to 847 across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, progressing towards its goal of adding 15 to 20 stations throughout 2024.
William Lane, vice-president of communication at Adnoc Distribution, noted that the company collaborates with multiple firms to explore new technologies enhancing customer experiences. "With the autonomous EV charging robotic arm, drivers won’t have to exit their cars. It is weather and waterproof and operates at any temperature. Currently, it is a proof of concept in early technology stages. It is complex as it must be programmed to reach the car. We do not foresee its immediate rollout but in the longer term. Ideally, an autonomous electric vehicle should have an autonomous charging mechanism. This can create a fully integrated, manless ecosystem with autonomous driving cars and chargers," said Lane.
