Three Year 12 students from Cambridge High School in Abu Dhabi have brought honor to the UAE by clinching a prestigious environmental competition at COP29 in Baku. The team, comprising Mehak, Parvi, and Tirushi, collectively known as Team Plethora, emerged victorious in the Oxford Saïd Burjeel Holdings Climate Change Challenge with their groundbreaking waste management solution.

Their innovative approach to sludge management involves utilizing a vortex and zeolite media to filter out ammonia and metals, while also reducing CO2 emissions through the addition of potassium carbonate, which converts into potassium bicarbonate. This dual-purpose solution not only addresses waste management but also contributes to environmental preservation.

As winners, the trio will attend the Future Climate Innovators Summer School 2025 at Oxford University, where they will collaborate with leading global experts. Reflecting on their success, the team expressed, “This opportunity is more than a dream come true—it’s a chance to advance our vision for a sustainable future.”

Originally conceived as a school project, the Plethora Foundation has evolved into a student-led organization focused on sustainability and well-being. Through initiatives like transforming donated clothes into tote bags, the foundation redefines traditional volunteering with a creative and impactful approach.

Earlier this year, Team Plethora presented their ideas at ADIPEC, gaining valuable insights from industry leaders. Their aspirations extend beyond winning competitions, aiming to implement their solutions across South Asian countries and beyond.

The Oxford Saïd Burjeel Holdings Climate Change Challenge received over 1,000 applications from 58 countries, underscoring the significant role of youth-driven innovation in addressing global environmental challenges. John Sunil, CEO of Burjeel Holdings, emphasized the importance of sustainability in their mission, aligning with the UAE’s vision for a sustainable future.

As Team Plethora prepares for their summer at Oxford, they remain committed to expanding their foundation and inspiring more young people to take action. Their ultimate goal is to create meaningful change across borders, addressing often-overlooked issues that are overshadowed by larger crises.
