Temperatures are skyrocketing, with the mercury reaching 50.7°C today in Suihan (Al Ain), as reported by the National Centre of Meteorology at 1.30pm local time. This marks the third time this year that temperatures have exceeded 50°C, with the previous instances occurring in July. Despite the end of peak summer, signaled by the sighting of the Suhail star on August 24, a rapid drop in temperatures is not expected. However, a gradual cooling trend is anticipated during night-time hours. The current period, known as 'Sufriya' (approximately 40 days after the star's appearance), signifies the initial shift from extreme summer heat to milder conditions.
In response to the intense heat, the UAE government has implemented a midday break from June 15 to September 15, providing respite for outdoor workers. This break prohibits work in direct sunlight and open-air environments between 12.30pm and 3.00pm. Non-compliance with this regulation results in fines of Dh5,000 per employee, with potential penalties escalating to Dh50,000 for multiple violations. Additionally, UAE authorities regularly provide essential supplies such as food, water, and other necessities to support workers in combating heat-related issues during this demanding season.
