Ubisoft has initiated development on a fresh Rayman game, with series creator Michel Ancel serving as a consultant on the project. The company's Milan and Montpellier studios are currently in the 'exploration phase' for the title.

Eurogamer received confirmation about the new Rayman game from Ubisoft, following Insider Gaming's report of a potential remake for the franchise. 'We are delighted to confirm that Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan have recently begun an exploration phase on the Rayman brand,' a Ubisoft spokesperson stated. 'The project is still in its infancy, and we will provide more details in due course. As the creator of the Rayman brand, Michel Ancel is being consulted to maintain consistency within the universe.'

Ancel, the original creator of Rayman, faced an investigation by Ubisoft in 2020 for allegations of fostering a hostile work environment. This investigation followed Ancel's resignation from the video game company, during which he also denied the allegations.

Ubisoft Montpellier's involvement in this new Rayman project is noteworthy, as the studio recently led development on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Earlier this week, Ubisoft announced that the team behind the metroidvania game had been 'shifted to other projects.' It is possible that this Rayman game is among those 'projects.'

The original Rayman game debuted in 1995 as a side-scrolling title. If this new project is a direct remake, the expertise of the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team would be highly relevant.

Rayman's most recent appearance was in DLC for Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope on Nintendo Switch. The last main series entry for the mascot was 2013's Rayman Legends.
