Ubisoft is allegedly developing an Animal Crossing-inspired game titled Alterra. In this game, players will establish their residence on an island populated by NPCs known as 'Matterlings.' Players can venture beyond their homes to explore new biomes, encounter Matterlings, and gather resources in the wider environment.
Insider Gaming initially broke the news about Alterra's development. According to their report, the game will employ voxels to create its world. Voxel graphics, for those unfamiliar, represent cubes on a grid, similar to Minecraft. Alterra will also incorporate building and crafting systems, enabling players to construct items and locations using materials found in the game world. The report suggests that Alterra evolved from a previously canceled project that also utilized voxel graphics.
Insider Gaming claims to have seen images of Alterra's NPCs. The Matterlings are described as resembling Funko Pops, featuring large heads and cartoonish figures, albeit rendered in a voxel style. Some Matterlings are depicted as mythical creatures like dragons, while others resemble real-world animals such as birds and polar bears.
The report indicates that Alterra is being developed at Ubisoft Montreal. Patrick Redding, formerly the lead on Gotham Knights, serves as the creative director for the project. Fabien Lhéraud, who has over 20 years of experience in marketing, brand, and media management at Ubisoft, is the lead producer. The report suggests that the game has been in development for 18 months and is likely still several years away from release.
