Britain's Foreign Secretary David Lammy is set to participate in the Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday, marking his first attendance in two years. This move comes as the new UK government seeks to 'reset' its relations with the European continent.
Lammy will join a group of 27 EU foreign ministers for discussions in Luxembourg, focusing on the Middle East and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, as stated in a Foreign Office press release.
Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, extended the invitation, which followed Prime Minister Keir Starmer's recent trip to Brussels. During his visit, Starmer expressed a commitment to moving beyond the UK's departure from the EU.
Lammy emphasized the government's determination to 'reset our relationships and deepen ties with our European partners' to enhance collective security. He views this visit as an opportunity for the UK to re-engage in discussions with its closest neighbors on critical global issues and address the significant challenges they face together.
The Foreign Office underscored Ukraine as a prime example of UK-EU collaboration, citing joint sanctions against Russia, coordinated training for Ukrainian troops, and mutual efforts in providing humanitarian support.
