President Volodymyr Zelensky stated on Sunday that Ukraine must bolster its air defenses to safeguard its citizens after air defense units shot down 50 out of 73 Russian drones launched overnight across multiple regions. 'An air alert has been issued almost daily across Ukraine this week,' Zelensky noted on Telegram. Over the past week, Russia has deployed over 800 guided aerial bombs, approximately 460 attack drones, and more than 20 missiles of various types, according to Zelensky.
'Ukraine is not a testing ground for weapons. Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state. Yet, Russia persists in its attempts to kill our people, spread fear and panic, and weaken us,' he emphasized. The Ukrainian military earlier reported on Sunday that air defense units had neutralized more than 10 Russian drones targeting Kyiv in an overnight assault. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries resulting from the attack, as stated by Kyiv's military administration on Telegram. Reuters witnesses heard explosions in Kyiv, which seemed to indicate the operation of air defense units.
'The UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) were flying in various directions towards Kyiv,' explained Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's military administration. 'The air raid alert in the city lasted for over three hours.' There was no immediate response from Russia regarding the attack.
