A high-ranking Ukrainian security official revealed that numerous Ukrainian forces are participating in an operation within the Kursk region of Russia, with the objective to 'extend' and 'unbalance' Russia. 'We are on the offensive. The goal is to extend the enemy's positions, inflict maximum damage, and unbalance the situation in Russia as they struggle to defend their own border,' the official stated on Saturday.
The Russian military previously reported that Ukraine had mobilized approximately 1,000 soldiers for this incursion, which commenced on Tuesday, seemingly surprising the Kremlin as Ukrainian troops breached Russian defensive barriers. When questioned about the number of Ukrainian troops involved, the official responded: 'It is significantly more... thousands.'
After maintaining official silence for several days, President Volodymyr Zelensky finally acknowledged the operation in his evening address on Saturday, stating that Kyiv was 'extending the war into the aggressor's territory.' Zelensky also mentioned that Russian forces likely utilized a North Korean missile in a nighttime air strike on the Kyiv region, resulting in the death of a father and his 4-year-old son. 'According to preliminary information, the Russians used a North Korean missile in this attack, yet another deliberate terrorist strike against Ukraine,' he posted on social media. 'Pyrotechnic experts are still working to ascertain the exact details regarding this missile.'
