Brandon D'Souza, Tournament Director of the Ultimate Golf Challenge (UGC), is committed to elevating competitive golf by integrating individual prowess with the synergy of team dynamics. Now in its second year, the UGC is an innovative franchise-based competition featuring 10 teams, each comprising 14 players, including two women. Each team is backed by a strategic partner.
The UGC's distinctive format enables golfers to compete not only for personal glory but also for their team's honor. D'Souza, a former professional golfer and current head of a sports and events management agency, shared in an interview with Khaleej Times: “What sets this event apart is the chance it offers players to meet and compete with individuals they might not have encountered otherwise. Many have played in smaller groups, but this event unites a broader community, and that’s where the magic unfolds.”
Each event will feature numerous daily prizes, culminating in the Grand Final, where one team will be hailed as the Ultimate Golf Challenge champion. The first event is scheduled for January 30, 2025, at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, followed by the second on February 7, 2025, at the Faldo Course at Emirates Golf Club. The Grand Final will take place on February 13, 2025, at the prestigious Majlis course, a gem of golf in the UAE.
Players are categorized by skill levels—low, medium, and high handicap—ensuring a balanced and fair competition. Every team must include two players from the low and high handicap categories, four from the middle, and two women. D'Souza underscores the importance of maintaining a fair playing field, stating: “The primary focus this year is to eliminate confusion and ensure players adhere to their registered handicaps. Regardless of your stroke index or course rating, your EGF handicap is the one you’ll play off.”
The event employs a blend of Best Ball Stableford and Individual Stableford scoring over three days. Day 1 involves five pairs per team, with the total aggregate of their Stableford points contributing to the team's score. Day 2 features the best ball format, while Day 3 is dedicated to singles play. Teams have the flexibility to rest weaker players on the first two days to optimize their chances.
Reflecting on the surge in team golf, D’Souza remarked, “I recently returned from Chandigarh, where we hosted the Trinity Golf Championship League, and it’s remarkable to see its popularity soar. People are absolutely captivated by it.” This fervor drives the Ultimate Golf Challenge, providing a platform for both seasoned players and newcomers to connect, compete, and relish the excitement of team-based golf. With its unique format and inclusive team-building aspect, it’s no surprise that the UGC is rapidly gaining favor among golfing communities.
