In Destiny 2: The Final Shape, players can now acquire Exotic class items for the first time. While Exotic armor pieces for head, chest, gauntlets, and legs have been available since Destiny 2's launch in 2017, the introduction of Exotic class items has significantly altered the game's dynamics alongside the Prismatic subclass. These items can be obtained and farmed through a repeatable mission called Dual Destiny, which includes a challenging clock puzzle that demands close cooperation between two players.
Since the release of The Final Shape, Bungie has introduced the ability to purchase Exotic class items from Xur during specific weeks, provided you've completed Dual Destiny on a given character. As of October 2024, a new option allows you to bypass Dual Destiny entirely. With the launch of Festival of the Lost 2024 on October 29, you can buy an Exotic class item from Eva using one Eerie engram and 2500 candy. These items can be purchased infinitely, and attunement, which is managed through Ghost at the Pale Heart, will influence the items, making it easier to farm the specific perks you desire.
To purchase an Exotic class item from Eva, you must own The Final Shape, but the ability to bypass Dual Destiny—which requires exactly two players—marks a significant change in how these items are acquired. Buying from Eva without completing Dual Destiny makes you eligible to purchase class items from Xur and earn them from chests in Overthrow. However, leveraging attunement requires completing Dual Destiny, offering an incentive beyond just the experience.
Each Exotic class item features two random Exotic perks from a selection of existing Exotic armor perks, with a chance for your item to have a perk not normally associated with your Guardian class. For instance, Hunters can gain enhanced damage when surrounded by a Synthoceps perk, while Titans can ready their weapons faster with an Ophidian perk.
To obtain your first Exotic class item, you must complete the Exotic mission, Dual Destiny. This mission involves significant effort to unlock and requires clear communication with your fireteam partner. Completing Dual Destiny grants you the Hunter Exotic cloak Essentialism, Warlock Exotic Band Solipsism, and the Titan Exotic Mark Stoicism, along with unlocking attunement.
Exotic class item perks only function when you have the Prismatic subclass equipped. To begin your journey toward an Exotic class item, complete an Overthrow event in the Pale Heart. This clears enemies from the area for five minutes, spawning a new boss and minions. Defeat them quickly, and look for a pale green beam of light in the sky to unlock a new room and receive the 'Savathun's Envoy' buff.
In this new room, face a small army of enemies. A Subjugator will appear at one of the Black Fleet cruxes, and you must kill it to obtain either a Light or Darkness orb. Place the orb on the correct plate and defeat the second Subjugator to unlock a mission node on your map. This Exotic mission requires exactly two Guardians and involves a timed activity where completing sections extends the countdown.
Your first task is to escape the room, which depends on your equipped subclass. Players with Light or Darkness subclasses will have specific buffs, and if both use Prismatic subclasses, roles are randomly assigned. Stand on the correct plates to lower the barrier. As you progress, you'll encounter enemies that can only be defeated by the Light or Darkness player, dropping Motes of Light that light up pedestals.
Once you complete this task, you'll teleport to new rooms with additional pedestals to link up. The next section tests your platforming skills, requiring you to move across the level, step on Light and Darkness plates, avoid traps, and defeat tough enemies. Prepare for a fight as Tormentors spawn, and the player landing the final blow gains the 'Harmonic Sundering' buff.
In the final room, take on two bosses. When Expector Selin's shield drops to 60%, it becomes immune, and three symbols appear. One Guardian reads them out, and the other destroys them in order. Damage the Subjugator until it has one-third health left, spawning Expector Yemiq. Use the same strategy for Yemiq, then focus on clock dials to drop shields on both bosses.
The final part involves choosing sides in a PvP-style encounter. Both players can pick up their new Exotic class item with random perks. After completing the mission, you can farm it for new random rolls. There's a rare chance to get an Exotic class item from chests in the Pale Heart and as a reward from Overthrows. You can also get a guaranteed new class item from Dual Destiny each week for each character.
Initially, farming Exotic class items was slow, prompting complaints from fans. Bungie responded by increasing drop rates in Update 8.0.5 in August 2024. Completing Overthrow activities increases your chance of receiving an Exotic class item, with higher-tiered chests offering bigger increases. This boost also applies to Lost Sectors and co-op missions in the Pale Heart.
You can still get Exotic class items from any chest in the Pale Heart, but world chests do not increase the drop chance. Focus on Overthrow for efficient farming. Attunement, unlocked after completing Dual Destiny, allows you to influence specific perks on your class item, helping you get the desired roll.
