Carlos Alcaraz's impressive Grand Slam winning streak was abruptly halted at the US Open on Thursday, as the former champion from Spain suffered a 6-1, 7-5, 6-4 defeat at the hands of unseeded Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round. Alcaraz struggled from the outset, committing numerous unforced errors throughout the match, which allowed Van de Zandschulp to end the Spaniard's 15-match winning streak in major tournaments, including victories at the French Open and Wimbledon.

The 21-year-old Alcaraz found himself on the defensive early, with Van de Zandschulp seizing the first three games through solid backcourt play. The Dutchman continued his momentum by breaking serve again in the sixth game, securing the first set. Although Alcaraz managed a remarkable forehand pass to hold serve in the opening game of the second set, his difficulties in finishing points persisted, leading to another break and a 2-1 lead for Van de Zandschulp.

A strategic adjustment by Alcaraz, returning serve from a deeper position, allowed him to break back immediately. However, a double fault by the 2022 champion handed Van de Zandschulp another break, extending his lead. After a brief pause before the third set, Alcaraz faced further challenges as a misdirected forehand gifted another break to Van de Zandschulp. Despite a momentary recovery and a return to his positive demeanor, the world number 74, Van de Zandschulp, maintained his advantage and secured a remarkable victory.

Van de Zandschulp expressed his disbelief and joy post-match, stating, "Actually I am a little bit lost for words. It's been an incredible evening here. I think from point one here today I believed (I had) a chance. I had some nerves but I think if you want to beat one of these guys you have to be unbelievably calm and keep your head there."
