The initial shipment of F-16 fighter jets manufactured in the US is currently being transported to Ukraine from Denmark and the Netherlands, and these jets are expected to be patrolling Ukrainian airspace this summer, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Blinken made this announcement on Wednesday during an event at the NATO summit in Washington, where he also revealed that a comprehensive support package for Ukraine would be presented in the coming days, aimed at solidifying Ukraine's path towards NATO membership.
"I am delighted to confirm that the transfer of F-16 jets is already in progress, originating from Denmark and the Netherlands," Blinken stated. "These jets will be operating in Ukrainian skies this summer, ensuring that Ukraine can maintain its effective defense against Russian aggression." Strengthening air defenses has been vital for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Moscow resumed its aerial attacks on Ukraine's power grid in the spring, leading to widespread power outages.
President Volodymyr Zelensky recently expressed his intention to double Ukraine's air defense capabilities over the summer, emphasizing the need for at least seven additional Patriot systems for protection. NATO members have pledged to deliver five additional Patriot systems and other strategic air defense assets to Ukraine. Further announcements of aid are anticipated at the Washington summit, which coincides with the alliance's 75th anniversary.
A joint statement from the leaders of the United States, Denmark, and the Netherlands highlighted that the Danish and Dutch governments are in the process of donating American-made F-16s to Ukraine, with the backing of the United States. "We extend our gratitude to Belgium and Norway for their commitment to provide additional aircraft, and to the other members of the Air Force Capability Coalition for their support," the statement read, underscoring the group's dedication to enhancing Ukraine's air capabilities.
