The US Secret Service announced on Monday its full participation in investigations launched by President Joe Biden and Congress members, following the failure of its agents to prevent a gunman from shooting and injuring former president Donald Trump over the weekend.
The FBI is treating the incident at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday as an assassination attempt. President Biden ordered an independent review on Sunday, while Republican lawmakers pledged immediate investigations. In her first significant statement since the shooting, which resulted in the death of a rally attendee, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle stated that the agency is enhancing security measures for Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, and the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which commences on Monday.
Cheatle expressed confidence in the security plan devised by the Secret Service RNC coordinator and partners, which has been reviewed and reinforced post-Saturday's shooting. She also mentioned that adjustments have been made to Trump's security detail since the incident to ensure his safety during the convention and the rest of the campaign. Trump reported that a bullet had grazed his ear during the rally but assured that he is in good health. He traveled to Milwaukee on Sunday and is anticipated to receive his party's formal nomination later this week.
