Ruud van Nistelrooy has expressed his desire to take charge of Manchester United on a permanent basis in the future but remains committed to his role as an assistant to incoming head coach, Rúben Amorim, following a successful four-game caretaker stint. Van Nistelrooy concludes his interim head coach role unbeaten, with two wins and a draw, and is optimistic about securing another victory when Leicester visits Old Trafford on Sunday, having already defeated them 5-2 in the Carabao Cup.

"Of course," Van Nistelrooy responded when asked if he aspired to return to the United hot seat. "I carefully considered my decision to join Manchester United as an assistant manager. I knew that being part of this journey with the club, even in an assistant role, was special for me. I had clear ambitions to manage, but I chose to sign a two-year deal as an assistant, and I remain committed to that role."

Amorim begins his tenure on Monday and will discuss Van Nistelrooy's role at United. The Portuguese coach will have nearly two weeks to prepare for his first match in charge, away against Ipswich, although most of his players will be on international duty during that time. One critical area Amorim needs to address is United's lack of goals; the team has scored only nine times in 10 Premier League games and must improve to climb the table.

"To be successful in the Premier League and Europe, a certain number of goals is essential," Van Nistelrooy noted. "That's why the top teams have those players. Currently, we have players who contribute goals and assists, but they are still in a development phase, and there is potential for growth. That's where we stand at the moment."

United received a boost with the return of Luke Shaw to training. The left-back has been out since February but will not be available for Sunday's match.
