In the months leading up to the release of Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy consistently mentioned that this would be his final appearance as Eddie Brock/Venom. Now that the film has hit theaters, screenwriter and director Kelly Marcel is offering her insights on the conclusion and its implications for the franchise's future.

Hardy's assertion that this film would be his farewell to the role appears to be accurate, as the movie seems to definitively close the door on any potential Venom sequels. The Venom symbiote heroically saves Eddie Brock and the entire Earth from Knull by merging with the invading xenophages and sacrificing itself. This leaves Eddie alive but now just an ordinary man, having lost his closest companion.

Marcel shared with EW that she and Hardy always envisioned wrapping up the Venom story after three films, with Sony's full backing. 'We always saw it as a three-story arc, and we always knew where it was going to end, and it's something that we thought about from the first Venom,' Marcel said. 'It is really special, and we've been really incredibly lucky. Sony have been incredible partners to us and really supported what I think is a really brave decision.'

Eddie Brock gets to ride off into the sunset, reminiscing about his friend, but the main antagonist of the film, Knull (played by Andy Serkis), remains imprisoned in his planetary confinement... for now. Knull's attempt to escape may have failed in this story, but the mid-credits scene hints that he will try again. And next time, there won't be a Venom to thwart his plans.

'We always knew that Knull was this massive, incredible, terrifying supervillain that we always were interested in trying to explore,' Marcel explained. 'We knew that we wanted to use xenophages in this movie, and they are obviously the children of Knull, as are the symbiotes, and so the xenophages have to be sent by somebody. But Knull is an incredibly massive character, so this movie is very much an introduction to that character. I'm sure he has many more stories to tell. You can't just do one Knull movie.'

The Venom symbiote and even Eddie himself have escaped death in the comics, but it remains uncertain whether Venom will return in this continuity, or which film will pick up the Knull storyline that commenced in The Last Dance.

Venom: The Last Dance is now showing in theaters.
