Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 had a highly successful launch earlier this month, and now a key executive at the game's publisher has hinted at what's next. This could involve story-driven DLC or even a full sequel, though plans are still in the early stages. Tim Willits, CEO of Saber Interactive, declined to provide specific sales figures but acknowledged that the game's success brings both passion and pressure. "When you achieve a significant hit and gain widespread internet popularity, there's an increased passion and responsibility for maintaining quality. This can sometimes lead to overthinking and stress," he told IGN. "However, this success lens is what drives the creation of exceptional games. With this perspective, we aim to produce even better products in the future."
Space Marine 2 attracted over 2 million players at launch, making it the most-played Warhammer game on Steam. Willits also noted that it's the fastest-selling game he's been involved with, spanning his extensive career at id Software, where he contributed to numerous Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake titles. Willits further revealed that the budget for Space Marine 2 was less than half of what Doom Eternal required, though exact figures were not disclosed.
The game's success allows the developers to "dream bigger," according to Willits, which includes potential story DLC and Space Marine 3. "Our game director, Dmitry Grigorenko, has pitched some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel," Willits said. "We're still recovering from the launch. It's only been two weeks. We need to let the dust settle. But I can confidently say that we won't let our Warhammer fans down. The success is too significant! While that might sound obvious, we hope to continue working on Space Marine content for a long time."
In GameSpot's review of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, Saber's sequel was praised as "a worthy successor to the 2011 original," featuring "brutally gory action" that "captures the essence of the tabletop game in its grimdark glory."
