The World Health Organisation (WHO) is scheduled to convene an emergency session on Friday to explore methods for guaranteeing equitable worldwide access to tests, treatments, and vaccines for mpox, according to a senior official, as the viral disease continues to spread across Africa and other regions. The session will involve members of a coalition of health professionals who managed the global Covid-19 response, including entities like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Ayoade Alakija, the session's chair and a WHO special envoy, emphasized the need to prevent the mistakes made during the Covid-19 pandemic from recurring in the mpox crisis, particularly regarding equitable access to medical interventions. The WHO declared mpox a global health emergency this week following a significant outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has spilled over into neighboring countries. Additionally, Sweden reported its first mpox case outside Africa, related to this outbreak. Alakija acknowledged previous failures in ensuring product access but expressed confidence in applying the lessons learned to prioritize equity in access to medical resources.
