For numerous expatriates in the UAE originating from colder climates, the decision to leave behind winter sports when moving to the region was a difficult one. Nevertheless, over time, various facilities within the UAE have enabled them to continue their enthusiasm for activities such as snowboarding and ice skating.

Shona Forpes, a Scottish expatriate, recounted her experience: “When I relocated here six years ago, I believed I wouldn’t be able to ski unless I returned to Scotland, and my children would miss the snow. But Ski Dubai is fantastic; we can visit whenever we desire. My children learned to snowboard here, and we ensure to practice before any holidays back home.” Shona’s family frequents the facility at least once a month, nurturing their passion for winter sports while creating cherished memories together. “It reminds me so much of home. Honestly, it’s incredible that we have this here,” she added.

Shona was among the hundreds of expatriates and tourists who attended Ski Dubai on Sunday morning to partake in the 15th edition of the Ice Warrior Challenge. For French expatriates Jad and Isabelle, Ski Dubai has evolved into a family tradition. “Skiing and snowboarding are our favorite pastimes, and this place allows us to sustain that passion,” they explained. This year, they participated in the Ice Warrior Challenge at its 15th edition as a family, strengthening their bond through shared experiences on the slopes.

The Ice Warrior Challenge, launched in 2010, has become one of the most prominent events on Dubai’s sporting calendar. This year’s event attracted over 500 participants from 65 countries, with competitors navigating a series of challenges in a frigid environment of minus four degrees Celsius. Matthew Lea-Robinson and Katie Loveluck, both from the UK and new to the UAE, found themselves in a chilly adventure at Ski Dubai. Matthew, who visited Ski Dubai for the first time while also participating in the Ice Warrior Challenge, said, “It’s been a while since I skied, and I’m eager to return for practice.” With plans to ski abroad in January, he noted that he “found the ideal spot to hone my skills. I’m already planning to come back regularly to relive those memories and improve.”

For Irina and Sergei, who have resided in the UAE for a year, Ski Dubai was a nostalgic reminder of their Russian homeland. It was their inaugural visit to the indoor ski resort, and they were pleasantly surprised. “Everyone was struggling due to the cold, but we weren’t. It felt just like home,” said Sergei. Irina added, “It’s not the mountains, but we adored it. This year, we never felt like we were away from home. Dubai has been so welcoming, and we plan to stay longer. This is just a bonus for us.”
