Danni Wyatt-Hodge marked her milestone as the first English woman to reach 3,000 runs in T20 internationals with an impressive 78 off 45 balls, while Nat Sciver-Brunt notched up her third consecutive half-century, as England secured a 36-run victory to clinch the T20 series. England's formidable total of 204 runs against the October World Cup finalists marked only the fourth time they have surpassed 200 in this format, and the series win is expected to boost the confidence of a team that faced harsh criticism following their early World Cup exit.
Captain Heather Knight expressed her satisfaction with the win, stating, "That's what we're about as a batting group. Nat and Danni showed their experience, continuing to be aggressive and continuing to attack." She added, "It was an unbelievable surface, I wish I could bat on there every week. When we get these sort of conditions, the game is there to take on, and a series win is what we came to do."
However, England's victory was somewhat aided by South Africa's below-average fielding, which included dropping Wyatt-Hodge on 9 and 29, and Sciver-Brunt on 25. Their bowling performance was also less than penetrative, with Sophie Ecclestone conceding 40 runs from her four overs. Annerie Dercksen was spared by a no-ball from Lauren Filer, and despite Sarah Glenn's four for 20, South Africa managed to score 33 runs in the final two overs. The win, though comfortable, was largely due to England's substantial runs rather than their fielding efforts.
England found themselves in a precarious position at 15 for two in the second over, as Ayanda Hlubi, who was erratic on Sunday, took two wickets in three balls, with Sophia Dunkley getting out for a duck. Wyatt-Hodge responded by aggressively driving down the ground to reach her 3,000-run milestone, hitting repeated boundaries and a six over the top. Once a peripheral player in England's T20 side, the 33-year-old Wyatt-Hodge has evolved into one of their most reliable players; in Benoni, she officially became their leading run-scorer.
Wyatt-Hodge was bowled by a Nadine de Klerk yorker in the 13th over, but Sciver-Brunt continued to build on her score, with Amy Jones adding back-to-back boundaries in a final-over cameo that pushed the total beyond 200.
