Following its release earlier this year to a mixed reception, Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded developer XR Games has reportedly laid off the majority of its staff. According to a LinkedIn post by the former head of production at XR Games, 72 out of the studio's 84 employees were let go. "This goes beyond restructuring," the former staff member wrote (via Road to VR and Eurogamer). "I'll keep my thoughts and observations to myself. Today, my focus is on helping those affected." Various roles across the studio have reportedly been impacted, although XR Games has not officially confirmed this round of layoffs. With the studio now down to just 12 people, the future of its upcoming games, Starship Troopers: Continuum and Zombie Army VR, seems uncertain.
Despite not being listed on GameSpot's sister site Metacritic, reviews for Hitman 3 VR: Reloaded have not been favorable. Several critics have pointed out that it fails to capture the essence of the excellent PC and console versions, with technical issues further diminishing its appeal. Shortly after its release last month, XR Games acknowledged player feedback and announced plans for patches to address the issues.
In contrast, another high-profile VR game, Batman: Arkham Shadow, is set to launch on October 22. Exclusive to Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets, this new Dark Knight adventure is set between the events of Arkham Origins and Arkham Asylum. Early impressions have been positive so far.
