Ha, recognized for her roles in Halo and Dune: Prophecy, will play the character of Sophie Baek, a name adapted from the original Julia Quinn novels where she is known as Sophie Beckett, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The announcement was shared via Netflix's official Instagram account, unveiling that Ha's character will be introduced in the series as the 'Lady in Silver'. This decision marks a notable cultural shift. In recognition of Ha's Korean background, showrunner Jess Brownell worked closely with the actress to choose a Korean surname for the character, selecting 'Baek' instead of the novel's 'Beckett', according to The Hollywood Reporter.
'A name is the first piece of identity you present to the world, and that's why altering a name can be incredibly significant,' Ha stated. 'To have Sophie's name reflect someone who looks like me is truly empowering. I owe that to Jess.' Ha disclosed that Brownell sought her input on Korean surnames beginning with 'B', ultimately deciding on 'Baek' to more closely align with Ha's personal identity.
