South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol managed to survive an impeachment motion in the opposition-led parliament on Saturday, a motion triggered by his brief attempt to impose martial law earlier this week. This outcome was largely due to members of his party boycotting the vote. Only one member of Yoon's People Power Party (PPP) remained seated during the vote; some eventually returned after opposition members urged them to come back and cast their votes. The calm atmosphere was a stark contrast to the earlier chaos in parliament, which had been filled with shouts and curses prior to the vote. This vote took place just four days after Yoon's actions plunged Asia's fourth-largest economy and a key US military ally into its most significant political crisis in decades, threatening to undermine South Korea's reputation as a democratic success story.
