During the COVID-19 pandemic, a 10-year-old Emirati girl from Ras Al Khaimah embarked on a journey into the world of honeybees. Mahra Hamad Al Naqbi started her training with the UAE Beekeepers Association through remote lessons. Initially a hobby to fill her free time, it has transformed into a full-time passion. Now 12 years old, she manages 20 beehives producing various types of honey including Sidr, Mangrove, and Samr.
Mahra's beekeeping activities range from feeding the bees, managing them during nectar shortages, maintaining their environment, expanding hives, and harvesting honey. "I mastered key beekeeping skills. After obtaining my certification, I began with two hives, which rapidly expanded to 20," Mahra explained. She recounted how she initially proposed the idea to her family, who eventually agreed due to her persistence and enthusiasm despite their initial doubts.
Caring for the bees has taught her responsibility, observation, and patience. "I inspect the hives weekly, checking for the queen bee and honey production. I also ensure the hives are free from diseases." Her knowledge has also helped her dispel common myths, such as the misconception that crystallized honey is impure. Recently, Mahra participated in the 16th International Honey Festival in Saudi Arabia, being the youngest attendee. She frequently educates her community and promotes environmental sustainability.
"I conduct educational workshops on beekeeping for my peers, introducing them to beekeeping tools and demonstrating how to start and raise bees," said the young Emirati. "I believe in the significance of bees for environmental sustainability, as they pollinate over 70% of plants, contributing to increased vegetation. Beekeeping is also a part of Emirati culture, with the UAE emphasizing honey production and organizing competitions to encourage it," Mahra added.
For Mahra, beekeeping is more than a hobby; it's a future aspiration. She aims to become a bee scientist and is already working towards this with her 20 beehives. She plans to develop her farm with diverse flowers and trees to support the bees and open a shop specializing in bee products like honey, candles, and creams. Reflecting on her journey, Mahra advised, "I encourage anyone with a passion or hobby to pursue it seriously." She also emphasized the importance of staying organized and balancing interests with school. Proud of her community's appreciation for bees, she is dedicated to sharing her passion with others.
