Australian police announced on Tuesday that a 'young person' has been charged in connection with an ongoing counter-terrorism investigation in Brisbane, the eastern city.

A Joint Counter Terrorism Team has charged the individual with 'one count of acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts', according to police statements.

Local media outlets reported that a 16-year-old is believed to have been planning an attack on a school in the northern part of the city. The Brisbane Times mentioned that the youth had been 'monitored for some time' by security services.

The Australian Federal Police declined to provide further comments but assured that 'there is no current threat to public safety.'
