British singer Zayn Malik announced on Saturday that he will delay the U.S. portion of his 'Stairway to the Sky' tour following the tragic death of his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne earlier this week. Payne, 31, passed away on Wednesday after a fall from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, leaving fans of the iconic boy band in shock. Investigators in Argentina are currently piecing together Payne's final moments, suggesting that his death may have been triggered by a substance abuse episode. Payne's room was discovered in disarray, with shattered objects and furniture, along with alcohol and suspected narcotics.
Payne rose to fame as part of One Direction on Britain's X Factor in 2010, alongside Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. 'Given the devastating loss we've faced this week, I've decided to postpone the U.S. leg of the STAIRWAY TO THE SKY Tour,' Malik shared on social media. Malik had recently unveiled the rare tour, featuring five stops in the United States and six in the United Kingdom. The U.S. dates, originally scheduled for October and November, will now be moved to January, including cities like San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and New York.
'Love you all and thank you for your understanding,' Malik expressed. The singer has maintained a low profile in recent years, following his departure from One Direction in 2015 during their Asia tour. The group disbanded a year later. Malik paid tribute to Payne on Thursday, stating, 'When it came to music, Liam, you were the most skilled in every way.' In the early days of One Direction, Payne was a cornerstone for the band, often taking the lead in performances.
'I was always reassured, no matter the situation on stage, we could always count on you to guide us,' Malik reminisced.
