Google engineers are set to restrict the capabilities of apps that are illegally installed on Android smartphones, according to Android Authority. Editor Mishal Rahman reports that the latest version of Android will introduce new limitations for apps downloaded outside of official channels, such as Google Play and other verified stores.

These apps, which have not undergone scrutiny, will be barred from accessing call and SMS functions, managing OS administrative tasks, viewing notifications, appearing over other app windows, and accessing special features. Rahman notes that the ability to install unverified apps allows users to put any program on their phones, including those banned by Google or local authorities. However, this feature is often exploited by malicious actors to distribute viruses through such apps.

In early September, Rahman also revealed one of the first features of Android 16, scheduled for 2025. The OS is expected to include quick settings from the notification panel.
