Sharjah Police has reported a 52 percent decrease in vehicle parts theft from January 1, 2024, compared to the same period last year. This significant improvement is attributed to a campaign launched on January 1, which focuses on monitoring abandoned vehicles across the emirate.
As part of this initiative, authorities identify unattended vehicles and issue warnings to their owners, giving them 24 hours to remove their vehicles before legal action is taken. A joint task force, comprising Sharjah Police and Sharjah City Municipality, conducts regular field inspections to ensure the campaign's objectives are met.
Colonel Youssef Obaid Harmoul, director of the Department of Comprehensive Police Centres under the General Command of the Sharjah Police, explained that this effort is part of the Sharjah Police's continuous efforts to enhance public safety and curb negative behaviors in the community. He further noted that the campaign, in collaboration with Sharjah City Municipality, aims to tackle the issues arising from the prolonged abandonment of vehicles, which often serve as hubs for criminal activities such as vehicle theft or the illegal dismantling of vehicle parts.
Colonel Harmoul urged the public to recognize the risks associated with leaving vehicles unattended for extended periods, emphasizing that safety is a shared responsibility among community members. He also highlighted that collective efforts to curb these negative behaviors not only enhance safety but also contribute to improving the overall appearance of the city.
