June's Xbox Showcase unveiled the first glimpse of Atomfall, a first-person survival-action game that bears a striking resemblance to the Fallout series. Rebellion Developments' distinctly British post-apocalyptic adventure now has a release date: March 27, 2025. Accompanying this announcement is a new teaser trailer that plunges viewers into Casterfell Woods, a hauntingly eerie English forest. If the sight of the red telephone box evokes memories of Doctor Who, it's no accident. In a guest post on Xbox's official site, Rebellion's associate head of design, Ben Fisher, revealed that the iconic British sci-fi series was a key inspiration for Atomfall.
Similar to Fallout, Atomfall's alternate history diverges from our own timeline in the 1950s. The game also incorporates the real-life nuclear disaster that occurred during the Windscale fire in 1957. In the game's universe, the fallout from this incident sets the stage for Atomfall's grim future. One of the player's objectives is to uncover the truth behind the Windscale incident, but survival is the immediate priority. As demonstrated in the video, the denizens of Casterfell Woods are not friendly and will not hesitate to attack the player's character. Additionally, a cryptic voice on the other end of the phone ominously declares, "Oberon must die." Oberon, known as the king of the fairies in medieval literature and a prominent character in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, likely holds significance in the game, even if he is not the same character.
Atomfall will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. It will also be accessible on Game Pass from its release date.
