Cher is opening up about her early days in Hollywood, sharing some personal anecdotes from her youth. In a recent excerpt from her upcoming memoir, “Cher: The Memoir, Part One,” the iconic singer, now 78, recounts her first encounter with Hollywood legend Warren Beatty, who was 87 at the time. Cher, then just 15 years old, describes a memorable night spent swimming in Beatty’s pool until the early hours of the morning, wearing a swimsuit that once belonged to Natalie Wood.
According to the excerpt, Cher and Beatty shared a kiss that night and went on to have two more dates. The story begins with Cher meeting Beatty in Los Angeles after he nearly collided with her car on Sunset Boulevard. “Pulling into the parking lot of the famous Schwab’s Pharmacy, I jumped out and yelled, ‘What the f–k’s the matter with you? You almost hit me!’” Cher writes in the excerpt published by DailyMail. “The man was wearing big, black-framed sunglasses, but I could still tell that he was unbelievably handsome, with one of the sexiest smiles I’d ever seen. When he took off his glasses, I realized that it was Warren Beatty.”
Beatty, who was 24 at the time, had recently starred in the film “Splendor In The Grass” alongside Natalie Wood, who was married but involved in an affair with Beatty. “Ten years older than me, Warren was so drop-dead gorgeous I had to steady myself as he asked my name,” Cher recalled. Despite her initial hesitation due to her curfew, Cher agreed to go out with Beatty, partly because of her mother’s admiration for him.
The evening took a romantic turn when Beatty invited Cher to his home. “He showed me inside, fixed us some cheese and crackers, then leaned in and kissed me,” Cher writes. “Now, this is interesting, I thought as I kissed him back.” The night ended with the two swimming in Beatty’s pool, Cher wearing Natalie Wood’s swimsuit, and returning home at 4am, much to her mother’s dismay.
When Beatty called the next morning to ask her out again, Cher initially declined, aware of her mother’s watchful ear. However, she eventually agreed to two more dates with Beatty, enjoying his company. The memoir reveals how her mother, despite the unconventional circumstances, allowed Cher to date a man nine years her senior, acknowledging the unusual nature of her childhood.
“Cher: The Memoir, Part One,” the first installment of her autobiography, is set to be released on November 19.
