The Delhi police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against a resident of Delhi for posting "obscene and insulting" remarks online about the widow of Captain Anshuman Singh, who was awarded the Kirti Chakra.
The police acted upon a letter from the National Commission for Women (NCW) to the Delhi Police Commissioner, requesting the arrest of the individual. According to the police, a complaint was received from the NCW, stating that a social media user had made highly offensive comments on a photo of the widow of a deceased soldier. The commission noted that the comments violated Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
"The NCW strongly condemns this behavior and calls for immediate police intervention," the women's panel stated on X. Following the complaint and a preliminary review, an FIR under sections 79 of the BNS-2023 and Section 67 of the IT Act 2000 has been registered at the Special Cell Police Station, and an investigation has commenced.
Captain Anshuman Singh, a medical officer, was stationed in the Siachen Glacier area. On July 19, 2023, a fire broke out at an Indian Army ammunition depot where he was stationed. Seeing a fibreglass hut ablaze, Captain Singh rushed to rescue four to five trapped individuals. He entered the burning medical examination room to retrieve a crucial medical kit but was unable to escape due to the intense fire and strong winds. He was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra.
Captain Singh's award was received posthumously by his widow, Smriti, and his mother, who accepted it from President Droupadi Murmu.
