Dubai Basketball has officially signed Lebanese basketball star Wael Arakji, one of the most prominent players in the Middle East. The 30-year-old joins the team for the 2024/25 season, bringing with him a wealth of talent and experience as Dubai Basketball continues its push for the ABA League playoffs.
Known as 'The Fearsome,' Arakji is a formidable force on the court, known for his high scoring and an impressive career that has seen him win championships in Lebanon, Qatar, and Tunisia. He has also had successful stints in China and the NBA Summer League with the Dallas Mavericks. Additionally, he holds two FIBA Asia Champions Cup winners' medals, the highest honor in Asian club basketball.
Arakji played a key role in Lebanon's victory at the 2022 Arab Basketball Championship and was the runner-up in the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup. In both tournaments, he was named MVP, averaging an outstanding 26 points per game in the Asia Cup. He will immediately join the Dubai Basketball squad for their upcoming match against Mornar on Sunday, December 15, at Coca-Cola Arena.
With the team currently standing at 8-3 in the ABA League in its inaugural season, Arakji's scoring ability is expected to add a new dimension to the team. As the season progresses and playoff spots become a priority, Dubai Basketball Head Coach Jurica Golemac is optimistic about Arakji's impact. 'Wael brings valuable experience and offensive skills to our team,' said Golemac. 'While he'll need some time to adapt to the league and our system, his talent is undeniable. We're confident he'll showcase the growing strength of regional basketball and serve as a great ambassador for GCC basketball.'
Arakji expressed his excitement about joining the new team. 'Something very special is being built here, and it will only grow stronger in the future. As professionals, we strive to play at the highest levels, and that's exactly what Dubai Basketball offers. There's a fantastic group of players and coaches here, and I can't wait to be part of it,' he said.
He also mentioned his anticipation of playing in front of the passionate Lebanese basketball community in Dubai. 'There's a hugely enthusiastic Lebanese basketball community in Dubai, and I know they create an incredible atmosphere every time we step on the court. It will be an amazing feeling to perform for them,' he added.
