Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has finished constructing ten out of sixteen truck rest stops at six crucial and strategic locations across the emirate. These stops are located along key routes such as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Dubai - Hatta Road, Dubai - Al Ain Road, Jebel Ali - Lehbab Road, and Al Awir Road, all of which see a significant amount of daily truck traffic.

In collaboration with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), the project aims to offer comprehensive services that cater to the safety and requirements of truck drivers. The facilities include essential amenities, prayer rooms, diesel refueling points, and rest areas for drivers. This initiative is also set to boost traffic safety and decrease truck-related accidents by 50%.

“Building truck rest stops significantly improves traffic safety by cutting truck-related incidents by half. These facilities not only enhance traffic flow during truck ban hours but also raise awareness among truck drivers and prevent them from parking on main roads and in residential zones,” explained Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA.

The rest areas span over 75,000 square meters, with the capacity to handle more than 5,000 trucks and heavy vehicles and provide parking for 700 vehicles. Each area ranges from 5,000 to 10,000 square meters and can accommodate between 30 to 45 trucks and heavy vehicles.

Al Tayer emphasized, “The design of these rest areas allows truck drivers to rest during traffic bans on certain highways and meets the growing demand for truck parking. This demand stems from the high number of truck journeys in Dubai, which surpass 300,000 daily and transport around 1.5 million tonnes of goods each day.”

This partnership with ADNOC not only strengthens Dubai’s status as a global logistics hub but also enhances the safety and welfare of drivers by providing essential facilities and services to meet their daily needs,” Al Tayer highlighted.

In 2023, RTA entered into an agreement with ADNOC to build and operate an integrated truck rest area near Emirates Road, close to Al Tayy Racetrack. This facility, covering over 76,000 square meters, has the capacity to serve 150 vehicles.
