Certain schools in Dubai are focused on forming a group of upperclassmen who will receive training in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). This initiative follows the recent introduction of a detailed mental health strategy in the emirate, valued at Dh105 million. Notably, MHFA is a globally acknowledged, evidence-based program intended to offer assistance for mental health problems, akin to how physical first aid deals with physical health issues. The Dubai Mental Health Framework is set to achieve 10 strategic objectives over the next five years and develop a comprehensive care model that addresses all facets of mental health services. Furthermore, the framework will focus on the educational setting by providing school staff and parents with the necessary tools to improve students' psychological health.

Khaleej Times contacted several schools and experts to gauge how these innovative measures will contribute to the 'care strategy' for students. Ian Plant, Principal/CEO of GEMS Founders School – Dubai South, expressed enthusiasm about the Mental Health Framework, stating, "It's fantastic to hear about the Mental Health Framework that will undoubtedly enhance the supportive and nurturing environment in all schools across Dubai." He mentioned that the school plans to offer counseling services, initiate peer support programs, and eventually train a team of senior students in mental health first aid. Plant also noted that the school has already formed robust partnerships with mental health professionals and organizations in Dubai to offer expert support and guidance.

Wellness experts emphasized that integrating mental health first aid in schools will foster a safer, more supportive atmosphere where students can excel academically and emotionally. Girish Hemnani, a Life Coach and Energy Healer in Dubai, pointed out the importance of immediate assistance for mental health crises within the school setting, ensuring timely support and minimizing the impact on students' education and overall well-being. Dubai schools already emphasize the mental health and well-being of all stakeholders, but adopting the new framework reinforces their dedication to making sure all students feel part of their school community.

School leaders are also committed to enhancing efforts to cultivate a more supportive and inclusive environment that prioritizes the mental and emotional health of students and the school community. Rashmi Nandkeolyar, DPS Principal and Director, highlighted the fortunate situation of living in a country where leaders prioritize mental health. She noted that schools are already attentive to the well-being of students and teachers, especially those with special needs. Other goals of the framework include promoting research and innovation and conducting studies to continuously measure and achieve psychological and community stability.
