Dubai has unveiled a new cultural gem—a museum dedicated to the art of photography. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), recently launched the Dubai Photography Museum project. This initiative aims to chronicle the global and regional history of photography, showcasing an extensive array of exhibits and collections. The museum will also honor local and international photography talent, shedding light on their diverse paths.

A joint venture between Dubai Culture and the private sector, the museum seeks to solidify Dubai's status as a global center for visual arts. In her announcement, Sheikha Latifa emphasized: “The Dubai Photography Museum marks a significant achievement, reinforcing Dubai’s stature as a global talent hub and a top destination for photographers worldwide. It acts as a conduit for knowledge exchange and collaboration with leading cultural institutions, reflecting our dedication to innovation and fostering meaningful dialogue through arts and culture. Additionally, it mirrors Dubai’s rich cultural tapestry, providing visitors with distinctive educational experiences and preserving the collective memory of photography as part of our shared human legacy.”

This project aligns with the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040, the cultural and heritage objectives of Dubai Plan 2030, and Dubai Culture’s mission to protect both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. With the global photography market projected to hit $62.4 billion by 2027, and museums worldwide contributing to job creation in related sectors, employing over 1.5 million people, the significance of this art form in bolstering cultural and creative industries is evident.

As a fresh addition to Dubai’s creative landscape, the museum will safeguard the region’s collective visual history. It will function as a premier international hub for photography, uniting photographers globally to exchange expertise, share knowledge, and offer educational programs and workshops for young people and photography aficionados.
