The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has launched four volunteer programs designed to engage community members in environmental preservation efforts, ensuring a sustainable future for both current and future generations.
Rasha Ali Al Madfai, Acting Director of the Environmental Awareness Department at EAD, emphasized, "At EAD, we view environmental responsibility as a collective endeavor. Our aim is to reach out to various societal segments, particularly the younger generation, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to comprehend the significance of environmental sustainability and our shared role in securing a sustainable future."
Al Madfai highlighted that EAD has initiated numerous volunteer programs to foster positive environmental behaviors and enhance individuals' contributions to environmental conservation. These programs are managed under the "Naha" platform, which offers opportunities for youth and community members to participate in activities promoting sustainable practices.
Additionally, the second phase of the Murshed Youth Rangers Programme, supported by TotalEnergies, has commenced. This program seeks to inspire and involve young individuals passionate about environmental protection. Participants have already contributed 300 volunteering hours at Jubail Mangrove Park and assisted in organizing field trips during the 12th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC), showcasing their dedication to environmental causes.
To encourage interaction among participants, a nature retreat was organized at Al Wathba Wetland Reserve and Jubail Mangrove Park, featuring activities like treasure hunts, team-building exercises, and guided tours led by young rangers. The event concluded with recognition of outstanding participants.
Murshed is implemented in collaboration with the Emirates Schools Establishment and the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge, offering guidance and leadership development for students aged 14-17. The Green Citizen Programme, on the other hand, provides opportunities for citizens and residents passionate about environmental work to contribute to Abu Dhabi's natural heritage.
A virtual meeting was held for volunteers to introduce new members, outline roles and responsibilities, present the 2024 plan, and showcase the "Naha" platform and EAD's awareness programs. The meeting attracted 68 volunteers, with 281 participants joining five clean-up campaigns.
The Green Experts Programme has expanded its network to 287 environmental experts from diverse fields and countries. Monthly scientific bulletins and three lectures were organized, while five volunteers engaged in an "Ask an Expert" session to exchange knowledge.
Launched in 2015 under the Sustainable Universities Initiative, the Green Youth Majlis targets young people aged 18-35. This initiative aims to empower youth to take proactive environmental action and support the emirate's environmental vision. The Majlis has over 650 members and meets quarterly to discuss solutions to environmental challenges, fostering open dialogue and productive learning.
Since 2019, 232 members have dedicated over 970 hours across 60 events, including the World Environmental Education Congress, beach clean-ups, and live educational sessions on topics like single-use plastics policy and community initiatives.
