With a prize pool of Dh9 million, an e-gaming league is set to revolutionize the competitive gaming scene in the UAE. Scheduled to commence in March 2025, the Emirates Gaming League (EGL) will blend traditional sports' best practices with the ever-evolving world of esports.
Launched in partnership between the Emirates Esports Federation and ITW Universe, the league is expected to draw top-tier gamers from around the globe. "The EGL offers a distinctive platform to nurture and showcase Emirati talent in esports, fostering a more competitive atmosphere and motivating players to refine their abilities while connecting with the community," stated Saeed Al Taher, Secretary General of the Emirates Esports Association.
The EGL aims to create a robust structure for esports, recognizing it as a unique and growing sector. By organizing competitions into various game categories—including racing, fighting, and sports—the league targets a diverse gamer audience. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to establish the UAE as a leading hub for esports, in line with the gaming visions of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
Participants in the league will be entitled to a fixed match fee of Dh5.5 million, irrespective of match results, in addition to over Dh3 million in prize money for winning teams. The EGL will include six franchises, each comprising eight players, with five competing in each match. International professional teams are required to feature an Emirati player, providing an estimated 4,000 Emirati participants with opportunities to hone their skills, gain experience, and share their knowledge.
A significant emphasis will be placed on player development, offering both seasoned athletes and budding talents the chance to thrive in a structured setting. The league will run for three months, featuring six days of intense competition alongside an electrifying e-gaming carnival, anticipated to attract over 30,000 visitors. This carnival will be open to the public, allowing fans to participate in gaming activities and enjoy performances by renowned international artists.
To compete in the EGL, players must be at least 16 years old, have valid identification, and comply with the league’s code of conduct and performance criteria. Registration will be handled through the official EGL website, with comprehensive instructions provided. Major streaming platforms like Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Facebook Gaming will broadcast the league, offering viewers live events and exclusive content.
The EGL is poised to be a groundbreaking move for the esports industry, fostering a lively, inclusive, and professionally enriching environment for gamers and fans. The league aims to attract approximately Dh4 billion in investment over the next decade, significantly influencing the global esports landscape. The league will be accessible across various platforms, including mobile, PC, console, and virtual reality, ensuring broad accessibility for players.
